CRICKET.
STODDART'S TEAM IN AUSTRALIA. BRILLIANT DISPLAY OF COLONIALS. THE ENGLISHMEN LEATHER -HUNTING, Adelaide, Oct. 28. The international crioket campaign opened to-day brilliantly for the colonials. The weather was glorious until noon, when a shower fell, stopping play for half an hour, but not impairing the pitch. A perfect wicket had been prepared. The attendance : was large. Druce and Board were left out of the English eleven. Lyons, who captained the South Australian team, won the toss, and deciding to bat, accompanied Darling to the crease. The latter, who took the first over from Richardson, was caught the second ball. Hill's arrival, however, stemmed the tide of disaster, and Lyons began to force play, an example which was followed by successive batsmen. The Englishmen, though still a little stiff from their sea voyage, f\glded splendidly, and were kept leather hunting throughout the day. Lyons displayed all his old dash, and young Hills was in one of the finest of his many fine innings, being faultless in style, and he never gave a chance. He scored all round the wicket. Jarvis, too, showed fine form, and the two completely mastered and tired the bowlers, piling on runs at a great rate. The full bowling strength of the visitors was repeatedly but ineffectively tried. Richardson and Hearn each captured 2 wickets, and Hirst the fifth. Storer behind the wickets fulfilled the high reputation he brought to the colony. When stumps were drawn for the day South Australia had lost fiye wickets, for 361 runs. The following is the score : — South Australia (first innings). Darling 0 • , Hill (not out) 200 Lyons , 36 Reedman - 22 W. Giffen 13 Evans 20 Jarvis (not out)..; • ... ... 66 j Extras ... 4 Total for 5 wickets ... 361
