The engine which fell on to the beach is considerably damaged, and to get it up again a line will probably have to be laid along the old track used in the construction of the railway, or else a temporary tramway on an incline. Thrte cars filled with cn.Uk- were detailed, and some of tho animals ' were knocked about. They had to be slaughtered at Johnsonville. . -'• Sir Robert Stout waa elected President at the tenth annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliance to-day, at which delegates were present from all parts of the colony. The report showed au income of £719 and expenditure of £736. Eight pounds waa sabscribed in the room towards wiping off .the deficit. Vice-presidents were elected in various parts of colony. The following executive was elected : Mesdames Plimmer, Reeves, Hallowes, and Grey ; Messrs Collins, Dodgshun, Harding, Martin, Lankshear, Reith, and Sims. On the motion of the Rev. F. W. Isitt, a resolution was passed establishing a Prohibition Colonial Council to take charge of legislative action of colonial importance. This was all the business. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The Land Board has received 778 applications for sections on the Highbank estate at Rakuia, recently acquired by the Government. In addition to these, 400 applications were put in at Kakaia. on Tuesday. At a meeting of the Progressive Liberal Association, a resolution was carried that the meeting wishes to enter ita most emphatic protest against some recent appointments as being of such a character as to bring honorable positions into the uttermost contempt. AUCKLAND, To-day. Mrs Harris, wife of Mr Harris, ex-railway station master at Auckland, dropped dead at her house at Elleralie. At the inquest a verdict was returned of death from failure of the heart's action.
