LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
- ■- » COUNTY AND MUNICIPAL CONFERENCES DISAPPROVE OF IT. Wellington, to-day. CEhe Bub-comraittee appointed by the Counties Conference to consider the Local Government Bill has reported that the measure in its present form is unworkable, and they consider it would not improve the efficiency of local government, while materially increasing the 'cost thereof. The Municipal Conference spent nearly two Ihours thia morning discussing the priu- - ciple of the Local Bill. Mr Phillips, Town Clerk of Auckland, moved that the Local Government Bill does not meet with the approval of thiß Conference, and that the Government be requested to introduce an amended Municipal Corporations Bill ob promised to the Conference last year. Councillor Gray, of Christchurch, moved as an. amendment, "That the Conference, while approving generally of tht principle of reduction and consolidation o! existing local bodies, contained in the Local Government Bill, is of opinion that many o l the details are capable of considerable improvement." The amendment was rejected, and the motion carried by 16 votes to 12.
