The Council of the National Association carried a resolution, firstly, regretting that in the face of the disclosures at Dunedia, it should have appeared practicable to the Premier that Mr Ward should retain office as a member of the Government ; secondly, that the Piemier's action in defending his colleague indicates a disregard for public morality ; thirdly, that the financial policy of the Government requires careful revision; and nrging enquiry into the arrangements connected with the banking legislation, advances to settlers, etc. DUNEDIN, To-day. A large crowd at the railway station met Mr Ward aud an address of welcome and sympathy was presented. Mr Ward, replyiug, dealt with the banking legislation, contending that if it had not been passed in 1894 ninety-nine out of every hundred merchants would have been ruined, yet those were the people who now turned on him.
