A very sad case has come to light a Masterton. A few weeks ago a man named Walsh came there from Sydney in search of work. After a time he sontracted typhoid fever, and was sent to the hospital. A few days ago he was discharged, and the local Benevolent Society sent him to Wellington with his fare to Sydney in his pocket. The man states he applied for a ticket, but was refused, on the ground that paupers were not admitted in New South Wales ; and that he then went to the Wellington Benevolent Trustees, and was sent back to Masterton. The local Benevolent Society now refuse to have anything to do with him, and the poor fellow, who is unfit for work, is in danger of being sent to gnol for want of other means of disposing of him,

Professor Paachen has been investigating the temperature of the sun. Among recent observers, Roectti has found a temperature up to lO.OOOdeg. C. by means of a thermopile ; Le Chatelier one of 7600deg. C. by comparing the absorption of solar rays with that of rays from a hot objeot ; Wilson and Gray one of 6200deg. by balancing the radiation from the sun against that from a slowing strip of platinum, in a Boys radiomicrometer ; Schemer one between 4000deg. C. and lO.OOOdeg. C. by measuring the breadth of thu magnesium lines in tho spectrum. Now Professor Paschen reckons it by considering the wave length of the radiation of maximum energy in sunlight as inversely proportionate to the absolute temperature of an incandescent body ; and this works out' a solar temperature of 6130deg. 0., equal to 9266deg.
