THE ADJOURNED CAUCUS.

MR WARD RESIGNS HIS PORTFOLIO.

AND BIDS GOOD-BYE TO HIS PARTY.

HIS PROBABLE RETIREMENT INTO PRIVATE LIFE.

Later 2 p.m.— The Ministerial caucus lasted exactly an hour. Mr Seddon said the Treasurer had resigned from the Cabinet, and on Mr Hogg's motion a resolution expressive of the sympathy of the Liberal party towards Mr Ward in hid troubles was passed. Mr Ward announced that he intended to make a statement to the House at half past two, and said that that was probably the last time he would meet the party in caucus. Those present are not at all unanimous as to whether this was meant as an indication of Mr Ward's retirement into private life, but the general feeling is that it was meant in that direction.

It was decided to ask the House to agree to an extension of the time limit to enable Mr Ward to speak longer than the half-hour allowed by the time-limit.

It waa agreed to set up a joint Committee of both Houses to go into the banking matters and to enquire into the confidence and capacity of tne officers of the Bank of New Zealand.

Mr Seddon is now at Government House tendering Mr Ward's resignation as a member of the Ministry.
