It takes aboub three seconds for a message to go from one end of the Atlsinlic cable to the other. A collision occurred at WoosuDg on April 30 between the steamers Onwo and Newchwang. The force of the impact was so great that the Onwo filled and sank within 10 minutes of the collision, . She had on board 350 native passengers, of whom about 300 were drowned besides the crew. The Newchwang was also seriously damaged, but fortunately she was quickly beached. The Sydney police say that daylight robberies are becoming very frequent in the western suburbs, and that they are characterised by unusal audacity. In several instances verandah posts have been scaled and the upper rooms of houses robbed while the occupants have been engaged below. The Victorian Cabinet has decided in addition to granting a bonus of 3d per gallon on all wine of approved quality exported, there should be a bonus of Is per gallon given for all brandy made from Victorian wine or grapes and shipped abroad, provided it is up to the required standard quality. A new torpedo-boat destroyer, Desperate, built by Messrs Thornycroft for the British Government, went recently through an official 3-hours' trial. She made 30 knots an hour with ease, the actual distance covered in the trial being 103| statuto milea. The wind was high and the sea rough. The Admiralty officials expressed themselves as being perfectly satisfied.
