Cook County Liberal Association.

The above Association held its annua* meeting at Townley's hall last night, the President (Mr A. F. Matthews) in the chair. The balance sheet was read and confirmed, and a resolution passed remitting all back fees due by members. The election of officers was then proceeded with and resulted at follows, the old officers being in most cases re-elected : I President : Mr A. F. Matthews. VicePresidents : Meadames Fox and Scott, and Mr T. Dickson. Executive : Mendames Warren, Stewart, and Maynard, and Messrs OHivier, Sigley, Birrell, Patterson, Ryan, Griffin, A Hansen, Joyce, Ross, Gallagher, Liddle, Wade, Maher, Scott, Lewis, Mooney, Duare and | Brown ; Hon. Secretary Mr R. N, Jones. The President referred to the work of the Association which he said had been instrumental in keeping before the Government the Interests of the people of the district. There was much they had to thank the present Government for, and especially their own member, who from his position first as a member of the Executive and now as a Minister of the Grown was able to bring before his colleagues the wants of this important district. They had had visits from all the Ministers and the people were able to approach them and tell them their , wants, and where a few years ago the district was neglected most deplorably it was now fast gaining the position it ought to hold and getting the attention that it deserved. One of the first things mooted by the Association — a Supreme Courthouse — was now an accomplished fact. The Deeds Registry Office, another very important matter urged by the Association, was fast Hearing consummation, and close upon that there would no doubt follow, when the deeds registry district was defined, a local land and survey district with a Laud Board. The Association had strongly urged this latter on the Minister of Lauds and would continue to follow the matter up. Just twelve months ago tho AsßOciation had preßsed upon Government the necessity of purchasing some parts of the Poverty Bay flats, and he (the President) and the secretary had interviewed Ministers in Wellington on the subject. The result was that Bruce's land was now bought and cut up, and would be thrown open in a shorb time ; the acquirement of the " Willows " depended only on the parties agreeing as to price, while another valuable block for suttlement purposes (Mr Newmans), was withdrawn before negotiations could be completed. And if they were only to judge their position as an electorate from the finanoial standpoint they 'would find that besides the L9OOO spent in the purchase of Bruce's property, some L 20,700 16s 6d had been spent on public works in the electorate during the past three years, and no doubt more had been spent since the 31st March, when the return aws made up to. This, it must bo remembered was spent on roads and works for the benefit of the people. If they added to this the amount spent in this district alone- in land purchases during the same time — over L 21.000 -they would find upwards of L 50.000 of Government money spent in reproductive channels. If they compared this with any previous period they would find that, as he had said, the district was not ignored, as it had been in former years, although even now they had only a portion of the justic

they deserved meted out to them. They ( must, however, not forget to thank the , Government for what had been done, and especially thoir own member (Mr Carroll), who had always been assiduous in backing up the pressing requirements of the district. To our member belonged the honor of settling the Uriwera as well aa other Native difficulties, and the importance of the roads through the Uriwera country to this district would only be fully realised whon the road which had been surveyed connecting this district by way of Galatea with Auckland was opened up. In conclusion he reminded the members there whs a time coming for which they would need to gird themselves. It was recognised on all hands that the National Association were making strenuous efforts to overturn the present Government. They must, be prepared for a great struggle, and leave no stone unturned to prevent the defeat of Liberalism. Messrs Ryan, Dickson, Sigley, and other also spoke. Votes of thanks were passed to the outgoing officers and the chair. The Dunedin Star thus describes a fish recently caught near the Kaik ;— lt somewhat resembles a frost fish in shape, but it measures 10ft 4in long and is prettily marked with stripes and bars, and it has feelers several feet long, and altogether presents a very strange appearance. Some say it is like a fish called the king of the herrings, occasionally taken off the north coast of Scotland. A 'Frisco correspondent writes : — Among the steerage passengers by the Mariposa was a certain G. J. Smith from Australia. The examiner of immigrants doubted, from his looks, Smith's ability to produce the necessary 30dol, whereupon Smith staggered him by showing drafts and notes to the sum of 50,000d0l ! Passed ! It is good cheer to the hearts of dress reformevH to learn that corsets are going out in Paris. Cyclers have renounced them entirely. One good thing which can be said of the voluminous sleeves and skirts is that the slim appearance thus given to the natural waist has helped to banish the corset evil. No matter how small the quantity of liquor imbibed by a man, if it is sufficient to cause him to act to the public annoyance in such a way as he would not have done had he not taken any, that man must be held to be drunk. So ruled Mr Martin, the Wellington S.M., on Satur-. day. A Sydney burgular burgled a surburban residence the other day and annexed L4O worth of goods and chattels, but " while engaged in maturing his felonious little plans," as Mr Gilbert expresses it, he dropped a roll of notes worth L2OO, which the householder promptly popped in the bank. Fair exchange is no robbery. There is a strange want) of uniformity in the ■measurements that constitute a " size " in the soft-goods trade. To wit a " size "in in a coat is lin ; in underwear, 2in ; socks, lin ; in collars, Jin ; in shoes 1-Cin ; in trousers, lin ; in gloves, Jiu ; and in hats Jin. In Eastern countries medical services must be given to women by women, or not at all. In ancient Greece the objection of ladies to male doctors was insuperable ; and that the prejudice has in great part vanished in the West is not so much a proof of its unreasonableness as that use has accustomed women to the absence of female medical attendants. The Admiralty has conferred distinction upon Mr Morrison, Inspector of Machinery for Otago, by promoting him to the rank of a senior engineer in the Royal Navy Keserve. Mr Morrison is the only officer of this rank in New Zealand. Dr Ilislop (ex-Under-Secrotary for Education) and Mrs Hislop celebrated their golden weddiug last week at Dunedin. Mr Watt has offered to supply Milton with his water gas for L 2187, and to , charge a royalty of 6d per 1000 ft. At Magaria, in Western Australia, a row occurred in which a barmaid was injured, and the assailant was seized by the crowd, who put a rope round his neck and attempted to lynch him. A physician who has given considerable attention to the subject of cycling says that so long as the cyclist can breathe with the mouth Bhut he is certainly perfectly safe aa far as heart strain is concerned. Anyone who has children will rejoice with L. B. Mulford, of Plainfield, N. J. His little boy, five years of age, was sick with croup. For two days and nights he tried various remedies recommended by friends and neighbora. He says : " I thought sure I would lose him. I had seen Chamberlain's Cough Bemedy advertised, and thought I would try it as a last hope, and am happy to say ' that after two doses he slept until morning. I gave it to him next day, and a cure was effected. I keep this remedy in the house now, and as soon as any of my children show signs of croup I give it to them, and that is the last of it."
