SYDNEY, Jan. 28. The repairs to the s,s. Miowera will take a little longer than expected aud she will not leave before Friday. The following New South Wales team has been selected to take part in the federal rifle match at Oamaru : — Lemaistie, Macallum, Vernon, Prott, Kiernan, Keating, Brooks, Mathieson, Young, CorK, Seymour and Stephens. The Marine Board found the wreck of the collier Aldinga was caused by the default of Captain Doyles. , The steamer Woldimibin has been totally wrecked at Bungaree Norah, between Sydney and Newcastle. The passengers and crew reached Newcastle safely. The Government has decided to grant free railway passes to sufferers from the excessive heat in inland districts who are unable to afford the expense of getting to cooler regions. Jan. 29.— The wreck of the Wolliembin is attributed to an error in the compasses. The heat is again intense in the western districts. Four more deaths have occurred at Bourke, and three at Wilcannia. The Hon. Mr Reeves has returned and gone to Victoria to spend a few days with his relatives. He considers there must have been a mistake in cabling Sir T. Playford's opinion re the Pacific cable to himself. The advantages gained by Australia appear to far outweigh those obtained by Canada. NEWCASTLE, Jan. 29. The Scatham colliery, which was hermetically sealed some months ago, owing to an outbreak of fire in the workings, was reopened, when the fire was found to be still smouldering. The burning portion of the mine is being walled off. MELBOURNE, Jan. 29. Within a few days the National Bank of Australasia and Bank of Victoria intend to release a considerable portion of their deferred deposits. The amounts released in each case will bo about £1,000,000, of which £200,000 will be payable in London. BRISBANE, Jan. 29. During the month 23 deaths have been recorded at Margominda. The majority were due to heat.
