The Te Aroha Fire.

Auckland, today.

Mr Hubert Cox, son of Mr E. Y. Cox, of Shaftenbury, sustained very severe injuries white getting through a window to e3eape the fire at 3?9 Aroha. He was badly out about the arms by the broken glass, and also severely burned. Mr Cox was to have left this morning for Auckland to be married. M r Morrison, an invalid boarder, had a, very narrow escape. He was unable to move himself, and was carried out at the last minute. The fire started in the hotel at about half-past 3 o'clock. — The Te Aroha fire originated in the card-room of the hotel. Mr Schultz, the landlord and his wife were driven out by the flames. They had time only to escape to the street in their night clothes, and the landlord then ran up the fire escape and alarmed the boarders. Hubert Cox and his •cousin, a young man Earned Langton, visitors from Melbourne, escaped by sliding down the verandah posts, and had a marvellous escape. Langton lost a gold watch and other articles, and estimates his loss at £60. The insnrances are as follow:— New .Zealand £1775, on Park House and the Club Hotel. Of this amount £825 are insurances from the following offices : National £165, Alliance £165, United £165, Standard £165, Norwich Union £165. The reinsurances are all on the Clnb Hotel. The North British and Mercantile bad £200 on the Club Hotel and £50 on the stock. The United had £300 on the contents of the Club Hotel, £150 of which ia reinsured in the North Queensland, add £50 on Bremner's stock. The National b&i .£IBO on the furniture and piano in Mrs Kenny's boarding-house, and £140 on the stock of George Bygrove, fruiterer. The Norwich Union had £300 on Robb's buildings and £165 on the, Club Hotel, reinsured, as stated above, in the New Zealand office. Dr Campbell owned the Club Hotel.
