Washington, Jan. 23. President Cleveland says Mr Davis' motion is inopportune, and would cause mischief and prove a misfortune if carried in the Senate. Senator Waleott • protested against th© jingoistic spirit, and demanded a friendly settlement! of the dispute. His speech was wildly cheered by the occupants of th» public galleries.
Senator Lodge declares that any attempt) to raise " jingoes " will fail.
