Strawberries at this time of the year are aa unexpected treat. Whilst all ordinary kinds of plants have been dried up by the heat, the " Mikado " strawberry, which Mr j Baker has introduced into the colony, flourishes, and bears prolifically. The Mikado is practically a perpetual bearer through the summer. Mr Bak6r's plants commenced to give fruit early in October, and with the exception of a short break they have been bearing ever since, and despite the drought the fruit is still luscious, though hardly as large as with the first crop. A strange feature with these plants, which grow to the height of a cabbage, is that whilst the first crop is grown on the ground like ordinary strawberries, as this is ripening, the plant throws out shoots, which bear the subsequent crops in clusters almost like grapes, a few inches above the ground. At a meeting of the ladies' committee and vestry of Holy Trinity Church, held last evening, it was decided to hold the f£te on Thursday, the 30th inst., instead of in February, as wns originally intended. This alteration has been made so that the benefit of a good moon may be taken advantage of. It is now some time since Holy Trinity Church has held a ffste, an event in times gone by looked forward to assuredly with a deal of pleasure and attended with great financial success, and on this occasion the committee appointed to carry the affair through are working very hard to make the intended fete as attractive and successful as those formerly held by the Church. Among the attractions will be athletic sports, for old and young, side-shows, and probably the services of the Vagnolia Brothers will be retained for the afternoon. The site chosen for the f&te is Mr W. Crichton Smith's grounds, which are situated at an easy walking distance from town.
