! The Sydney correspondent of the Melbourne Age says:— "Sir Henry Pnrkes is understood to be in embarrassed circumstances. It has always been a mystery to the people what the • Grand Old Man ' of the colony has done with his money. Many I years ago, in the days of the Empire newspaper, a fund which is understood to have reached £20,000 was obtained. Some few years ago another public subscription amounting to £10,000 was collected, which, it was understood, was invested for Lady ] Parkcs. The old man held office for some twelve or thirteen years, drawing a salary of £2,000 a year, and Gossip has it— l can't aay ; whether the jade is more truthful in this case than she commonly is— that a rlecaased wealthy colonist left him £500 per -annum 'so long as there was a Lady Parkes.' Perhaps it was a desire to sustain the life of this bequest that induced Sir Henry to take unto himself a third wife with tmch celerity. Then, again, ha ia said to have received £4,000 for his work ' Fifty Y ear a o£ Australian History.' Be that as it may the general feeling now is that some provision should be made for his declining years The only real difficulty is : What shapo. B hould it take? Some suggest a lump sum so invested that durinp his lifetime Sir Henry shall only nso the interest, others a pension bub meantime the matter is unsettled." \V. H.
