V.R.C. SPRING MEETING.
On Thursday at Flemington the attendance of the public for an off day was a record one. Watson made a wretched start in the Flying Stakes, the favourite being out of it from the fall of the flag. Wallace, the winner, covered the last six furlongs in lmin. 13&8ecs. Quiver evinced a decided disinclination to face the starting machine in the Oaks. She refused three times, and eventually was half turned round when the bar was released. Moore never attempted to start in pursuit of the field, who went away at a canter for the first six furlongs, taking lmin. 49|secs. The public were of opinion that Watson was equally to blame ] with the jockey for the mishap, but the stewards considered Moore's action so suspicious that they afterwards held an inquiry and decided to withdraw his license as ti jockey, the public receiving the announcement with silence. Kimberley (list 51b) fell in the Secoud Hurdles. Havoc scored a phenomenal victory in the Spring Handicap, his exploit evoking tumultuous demonstrations of applause. The following are the results : — Flying Stakes: Wallace 1, Nobleman 2, Bruin 3. Oaks Stakes: Regina 1, Athata 2 Vere 3. Second Hurdles : Favor 1, Apsley 2, Duke of Kent 3. Fourteen started ; v terrific finish, won by a head. Spring Handicap : Havoc 1, Preaton 2, Destiny 3. Fourteen started. Royal Park Stakes : Fortunatus 1 , Dreamland 2, Pilot Boy 3. Tarcoola, Ruenalf, and Port Admiral also started, the favorite (Ruenalf) being never prominent during the race ; won by a leDgth and a half. Veteran Stakes : Bes3ie McCarthy 1, Lady Trenton 2, Warminster 3. The Age forcibly denounces the policy of punishing jockies whilst allowing instigators to escape scathless. The Argus says it is almost incredible that Moore should have done purposely what he did in front of the grandstand with all eyes upon him. The stable connection lost heavily on the race. Nothing can palliate Moore's conduct in not attempting to joid the field, which apparently slowed down in the first six furlongs to enable him to do so. There is favorable comment over the pronounced success of the Musket stock yesterday ; Wallace, Havoc, Dreamland, and Lady Trenton tracing back to that sire. Melbourne, Nov.
