Onehunga Borough Council.

■■-■■■■ ■'-» •■ Affairs took an unexpected turn at Onehunga on Monday evening, when the ordinary meeting was to have been held. At seVen o'clooTr, the appointed hour of opening, the room was crowded with the publio, there not being even standing jpom oat on the stairway head. Then ensued an anticipatory wait. Those present discussed matters and laughed m an undertone, for the police were this time m attendance. The Mayoral chair was swathed m its oalice wrappings, while on Her Worship's table were a couple of candles, suggestive of the turning out of the gas the previous Monday evening. The town clerk sat at his isbst, md Messrs Jackson and Tapp, the " Opposition " members of the Council sat m their chairs, but the whole of the Government benches were empty. So it was until 20 minutes after the hour of opening, and then speculation commenced as to whether or not there was not going to be a " alip up " on the publio and the opposition Council. It certainly looked like it, for neither Mrs Yates nor a single supporter of hers was present. At three minutes to the ball-hour named by statute before an adjournment coald'take place the Tewn Clerk sent scouts through the crowd to see if any of the nyssing Councillors could be unearthed. But there was no success. Then the halfhour turned, but to paraphrase the observation of the London gamin, there "was no Mayor, no Councillors, no nothink." The press representatives afterwards saw Captain Yates, the husband of her Worship. His reason for the unexpected postponement was that Mrs Yates had heard a number of strangers were going from Auckland to attend the meeting, and having another engagement, and being desirous of upholding the dignity of Onehunga, she had gone to town.
