School Punishment.
Sib, — In a late issue of your paper I notice that the Christchurch School Committee have decided to abolish the cane aud substitute for it the strap. Now, sir, which gives the most pain to the body, the cane or the strap ? They are both very painful, and for this reason, I think, they both should be abolished. I suggest that the Gisborne School Committee should do away with the cane as a method of punishment, and instead keep the offending pupils m school after hours. The stick is all right for disobedient pupils, but for those who are not very bright m grasping the meaning of things I think they should be kept m after school so as to be shown, rather than punishing them with the cane. Ido not say that the method of punishing youngsters who are rather dull m learning is carried 1 on m the Gisborne school, which I hope not. I thiuk that the subject of punishment m our school should be brought up at the next meeting of the School Committee. Thanking you for using your valuable space.— l am, &c, Ferule.
