The following little anecdote about Mr Gladstone, as told by a naval officer of high rank, is given m Mr Smith's biography published the other week :— "ln 1870 I was lying mi n the Downs with two other ships. Mr Gladstone the Prime Minister, was stopping at Walmer Castle with the Lord Warden, and they intimated their attention of visiting the senior officer, who at once turned to the regulations to see what honors a Prime Minister was entitled to on visitiug a man-of-war, and nothing could be found. Here was a dilemma ; but fortunately it was found the Lord Warden is entitled to nineteen guns m his own jurisdiction, so yards were manned and the salute fired, and Mr Gladstone stood up and graciously bowed, and took to himself
