[By Telegraph.— Press Association.] WELLINGTON, To-day. At the Land Board H. D. Atkinson, clerk to the Hutt County Council, was called before the Board to show cause why his section of 100 acres m Mackenzie special settlement should not be forfeited on the ground that he had not improved the property. He explained that the reason why be had not gone m for improvement was that he and others m the Mackenzie special settlement did not kuow whether they were tinder the Land Act of 1892 or that of 1893. Atkinson denied taking up land for speculation as alleged by the members of the Board. It was decided to forfeit the land. Similar action was taken with regard to L. Larrelly's block m the same settlement. Other cases were deferred until next meeting.

The Premier was interviewed this afternoon by a deputation from the School Inspectors' Conference, who urged upon Government the propriety of publishing a new flora of New Zealand. It was pointed out that the last flora was published as far back as the year 1864, and since then some 450 or 500 new plants had been discovered m the colony, while various descriptions of noxious weeds had also been introduced, and these latter the deputation thought should be included m the flora for the benefit of agriculturists. The Premier said he was m sympathy with the objects of the deputation, and would bring their representations under the notice of his colleagues m the hope that next session the necessary steps would be taken for publication of the work. The price of the work at first cost would be between £2000 and £3000, but if they decided to include noxious weeds the outlay would be two or three times that sum. Government were now making enquiries as to whether the work could be done elsewhere at less cost.

Father Carolan, who has been one of the masters of St. Patrick's College since it opened m 1885, died this morning of consumption. The Postal Conference will be held on March 5. It is expected that a good deal of preliminary business will be settled before hand on the trip m the Hinemoa,. Staples, brother of the well-known Wellington bootmaker of that name, while harvesting near Maraekakaho, met with a fatal accident. He was driving a dray loaded with sheaves, when he fell, and the wheel crushed his stomach. He died m a few hours. Bernard Hearne, gardener at Mangatoro b tat ion, near Danevirke, was drowned while bathing yesterday. In connection with the suppression of betting at the championship athletic meeting the committee of the local club has decided to wait on the Inspector of Police and request his co-operation.
