The Troublesome Prize-Fight.
Melbourne, Jan. 29. — A cable message to the Australian papers dated London, 25th January, says that the prize fight for the world's championship between Jas. Corbett (the Californian who defeated J. L. Sullivan about twelve months ago) and Charles Mitchell, was brought off at the Duval Club, Jacksonville, Florida. The intention of the Governor of the State to intervene was abandoned, owing to the decision of the Supreme Court that a glove fight was not illegal. There was immense excitement over the affair, and a large crowd from all parts of the Union assembled to witness the contest. Corbett was a strong favorite, the odds upon him being 10 to 4. In the third round Mitchell failed to come up to time, and was counted out, and the victory awarded to Corbett, the fight having lasted nine minutes. Immediately afterwards Mitchell and Corbett were arrested, but were released on bail.
