SIR H. NORMAN APPOINTED. London, Sept. 4. It is officially announced that General Sir Henry \V. Norman, Governor of Queensland, has been appointed Viceroy of India. Sepfc. 5. Lord Lansdowne's term as Viceroy of India expires in December. The Times says Sir Henry Norman's appointment comes as a great surprise. The Daily News thinks few men could bo found v\ho would fill the position better. The appointment of Sir Henry Norman as Viceroy of India astounded the highest Anglo-Indian circles. The Marquis of Lansdowne was not informed of the appointment. Fears are expressed in India that the new Governor-General will not follow the Afghan and vigorous frontier policy of Lord Roberts and the Marquis of Lausdowne. Bki.shaxe, Sept 5. Sir H. Norman has accepted the post of Viceroy of India. His departure is universally regretted. Sept. 6. In the course of an interview, Sir H. Norman said he was unable to state why he had been selected as Viceroy of India. It was an unusual step for the Imperial Government to appoint so old a man to the Governor-Generalship. He received the first intimation of the appointment on Friday last. [General Sir Henry W. Norman, G.C.8., G.C.M.G., C.1.E., Governor of Queensland, has had a distinguished military career. He joined the Bengal army in 1844, and served through the Indian mutiny of 1857-9. He was present at the relief of Lueknow, where his horse was shot from undar him. Sir Henry was appointed in 1883 Governor of Jamaica, and in 18S9 he assumed the Governorship of Queensland. The distinguished position has now been conferred upon him, most likely on account of his extensive Indian experience.]
