During the voyage of the barque Lutterworth, wliich has arrived from Liverpool, Dr. Williams, who was a passenger by the vessel, died and was buried at sea. He was accompanied on the voyage by his wife and four children, and intended to have practised his profession in Whangarei. He had been unwell from the time of joining the vessel. In the Divorce Court rules nisi in the following cases were made absolute : Finnimoro v. Finnitnore (wife's petition), Goff v. Goff (husband's petition), Bailey v. Bailey (husband's petition). A conference is to take place in Wellington early next month between a committee of the Primitive and the Methodist Church, consisting of the Rev. C. E. Ward and Messrs D. M. Luke (Wellington), D. Goldie (Auckland), and Bellringer (New Plymouth), and delegates from the minor Methodist bodies, the object being to formulate the basis of union. Major Messenger will have charge of the Rifle Association camp at Trentham. To-day. — The Governor has intimated that he will attend the Caledonian gathering here on January 2nd. Government will shortly call tenders for the extension of the Rotorua railway line from the present contract to the terminus at Rotorua. Mr Holmes, resident engineer of Huntervillc, has been instructed to fit out a survey party for exploration purposes in connection with the North Island main trunk line. This has been done in accordance with the report of the Parliamentary Committee. _ The country between Mokau and Mokarimo on the central route will be first explored. Cabinet has authorised the immediate application of £3000 for additional formation work on the Kamo-Hikurangi railway (Whangarei) and £2000 on bushfalling and formation at the Eketahuna end of the Eketahuna-Woodville railway. Communication over the Rimutaka is not likely to be restored before Monday. Mr Bectham, R. M. of Christchurch, has been appointed Commissioner to enquire into the circumstances surrounding the death of All Clung in the Wellington lunatic asylum. The Defence Minister has arranged to supply the volunteers with Snider ammunition at 8s 3d per 100 rounds and Martini ab a reduction of 2a per 100 rounds on the present cost. To-day. — Albert Thomas, charged with assaulting Mr Kirkbride, was remanded for

a week. The changes respecting the police inspectors will probably be announced this evening. All of the Ministers will assemble in Wellington the week af tcp next. On the recommendation of the Minister of Public Works the Railway Commissioners have agreed to reduce the rates for unemployed by one-half. Hitherto full rates have been charged, but as the Union Company and Mauawatu Railway Company have granted the concession the. Commissioners have fallen in with the Minister's views. Mr Seddon returns to Kumara at Christmas, and leaves for Australia early in the new year. Mr Ballance is steadily improving.

DUNEDIN, To-day. In a. breach of promise case brought by a domestic servant against a road mender named Francis, Mr Justice Williams gave judgment for plaintiff for £180. Air Cadman visited the Kaik at Otago Heads yesterday, where he was hospitably received. The occasion was a notable one, as, though the late John Sheehan once visited the Kaik, he did so unofficially, and this was the first time a Native Minister had paid mi official visit. After greetings, the question of natire claims for a " tenth " of the land comprised in the Otago block, and for the Dunedin Boat Reserve in Princess Street or its value, (a claim amounting to considerably over one million pounds) was opened. The claim is being prosecuted by T. R. Ellison, solicitor, of Wellington, and R. Carrick, agent. The Minister let the meeting clearly understand that he considered the natives had no claim either in respect of the "tenth" or of the boat reserve. AUCKLAND, To-day. The case against Alexander Scott, charged with the murder of Thompson, of Waikomiti, is proceeding at the Police Court, and will occupy some days.
