COOK COUNTY V. WAIMATA

Saturday afternoon was miserably wet, but in spite of this there was a very fair muster. A number of ladies were not deterred by this inclemency. The malch whs a very even one. There was not a great deal of science on tither side, and the struggle was one of strength. The following were the teams : — Cook County : Full-back, Simeon ; three quarters, Crowley, Cruise, and Manu ; half-backs, F. Hutchison, (Captain) and Tanatiu ; forwards, Ruru, J. Hutchison, Orr, Hata. Tuhoi, Hemi, Mini, Riki and Pahu. Waimata : Full-back, Glassford ; throequarters, P. Richardson, MuPhail, and Whitehouse ; half-backs, Dods, (Captain) and Sheriff: forwards, Lysnar, Richardson (3), Leggatt (2) Porter, Eskdale, and Neilaon. Waimata. kicked off, and for a long time play was kept in the centre, until at length the County got it into t,he Waimata centre, but Dods came to the rescue with a good run back to mid-field. Waimata then visited County centre, but wore soon driven back by a good rush, aud Avere eventually forced. Waimata then made a fine rush to the other end of the field, but the County replied by driving them back'to the centre, and after a time from there to their opponents' 2b. After some see-saw play from there to the centre, Waimata drove the County back and forced them. Almost immediately the latter were again forced, and then after a long struggle in their 25 drove the Blacks back to the centre, then into their own 25, and finally forced them. Half-time was called with play in Waimata 25. Score nil. After a deal of give and take play, the Blacks were to be seen in Yellow land, and soon forced them. Then after aome centre play, McPhail made a tint 5 run into County 25, where he was well collared by Tuhoi. Then occurred a hard fight on the line. Waimata struggled very hard indeed to get in, but tht> County made a splendid defence. The struggle lasted a very long time, until Sherriff kicked the ball behind, and following up seemed as if there was nothing to prevent him from scoring, but as usual the spectators were crowding on the line in a manner to interfere with the game, and SherriiTcHine into collision, and before he could recover the County had forced. Play was now for a time confined to mid field A second grand struggle then took place, again ending in the County being forced. Soon after the leather being again put in motion, time was called. The match was therefore a drawn one, neither side scoring. The most noticeable players for the County were : — Simeon, Hutchinson, F. and J., Crowley. Orr, Tuhoi, Hemi, and Riki. Cruise, who was a forward player, was a failure at three-quarters, and in the second spell was put in his proper place, where he played a rattling game. For the Waimata the most prominent were : — Glassford, Richardson, Dods, Sheriff, and Lysnar, McPhail also played a fine game, but was too fond of kicking the ball from the ground as it was driven towards him. This was a fault of several on each side, and is a very dangerous practice. Whitehouse also played a good game, but he talks far too much. This is another fault which is common to a great many players in all the teams.
