The s.s. Tekapo's departure for South has been altered from 3 p.m. to 8 a.m. The steamer is due here early to-morrow morning and at Napier to-morrow evening. The U.S.S. Co.'s s.s. Oreti left Napier at 11 this morning and arrives here at 7 this evening. She proceeds on to Coast ports and Auckland at 8 p.m.* The U.S.S. Co.'s s.s. Tekapo left Auckland at 8.15 last evening and arrives here early to-morrow morning. She proceeds South at 8 a.m. The U.S.S. Co.'s s.s. Tarawera, from Southern ports and Melbourne, arrives here to-morrow morning, proceeding North at 10 a.m. The Union S.S. Company's s.s. Australia is to take up the West Coast running from Wellington to the Manukau for next week, in place of tjie s.s. Mahinapua, which lays up at Wellington for a week. Crossing the Atlantic one day an English actress saw the man at the wheel receive a blow on his head. It appeared to be such a severe one that she was much affected, and did not come up on deck again until land was sighted. Then she saw the same man at the wheel, and enquired gently of him, " How is your head now ?" " West-by-nor', mum," was the reply. I Some years ago a British barque named the Aikshaw came to Gisborne with plant for the harbor works. She has recently been wrecked on the coast of South America and several of her crew drowned.
