SYDNEY, June 9. The local branch of the New Oriental Bank suspended payment this afternoon. The last returns show that the Sydney deposits amount to £237,000, the total liabilities being £248,000, while the assets amount to £418,000. The returns from the Victorian branch show the deposits to be £57,000, the total liabilities £61,000, and the assets £477,000. (Received June 10, 11.40 a.m.) June 10 — Canon Chalmers, of Melbourne, has been elected Bishop of Goulbuurn. The Associated Broken Hill miners are putting out a proposal to perform all work in the mines under contract. This propoaal is likely to cause trouble with the Miners' Association, which last week decided against the introduction of the contracts system. MELBOURNE, Jr>E 9. Obituary : Mr Chapman, who, under the name of " Augur," was until recently editor of the sporting matter appearing in the " Australasian." June 10.— The closing of the Oriental Bank caused but little excitement in the city, the bank having only a small circle «f customers here. BRISBANE, Ju>-e 10. The Full Court h*»s decided that companies with head offices outside of Queensland are liable to pay duty on money lent on the security of Queensland properties. The matter is likely to be taken to the Privy Council. The weather bureau still advises that rough seas are likely to be experienced between New Zealand and Gabo Island. Mr Hall, a labor candidate, has been returned for Bundaberg constituency. ADPXAIDE, June 10. Parliament has been opened. The speech from the Throne {indicates that fresh taxation will not^be necessary. Government propose to grant a bonus to butter exporters, and will subsidise vineyard planting, with the alteration in the Customs duties in their favor. It is also mentioned that the colony will continue to be represented on the Federal Council pending the adoption of the Commonwealth Bill.
