Wesleyan Church Anniversary.
The anniversary of the local Wesley Church was celebrated last evening by a very pleasant social in the Theatre Royal. There was a good attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The stage was comfortably arranged as a drawing room, and a number of the young ladies and gentlemen of the congregation were there seated. At several times they contributed some very fine choral selections. The Wesleyan choir is a strong one, and the members seem very much devoted to the service of praise. In the interval refreshments were served, and these were exceptionally good. The supply was an abundant one, and th« fair waitresses were kind in their attentions. The Rev. Mr Gibson occupied the chair during the first part of the entertainment, the Mayor being detained at a meeting of the Borough Council, but at the latter stage His Worship was present, and at the close he delivered a very cheerful address, in which he congratulated the Church and its minister on the progress which was being made in the cause of Christ. Mr DeLautour delivered a thoughtful and earnest address on the subject " Change." The various musical items were all very enjoyable. Below is the programme :— lnstrumental quartette, Messrs Dari*», Ormond, Parnell, and Foster; duet, "Memories of Home, Mrs Goldsmith and Mr East : song, " The Banks of Allan Water," Mr Dalrymple ; chorus, " Hear the trumpet loudly calling," Choir ; song, " Queen of the Earth," Mr j. Searle ; address, Mr DeLautour ; song, " Killarney," Mrs Goldsmith. Interval for refreshments. Solo and chorus, "I dream of the land," Miss J. Oxenham and Choir ; song, " Bay of Biscay," Mr Mitchell ; recitation, "Henry of Navarre," Mr Slack; chorus, "Gentle Words," Choir; violin duet, Mr Davies and Master Turnbull ; song, " The Pilot's Farewell," Mr East.
