The Salvationist Maori Missionaries.
Wanganui, to-day. A party of Salvationists conducting a Maori mission up the Wanganui river were capsized from a canoe in the rapids at Ranana, 60 miles from town, yesterday, and Lieut. Robert Maokie, 28 years of age, whose parents reside in Auckland, was drowned.

Wellington, last night. Replying to a deputation from the Single Tax Society to-day, the Premier' said ho was largely in symiJathy with. the views of the deputation as to land values being the proper object of taxation, but at present very little could be done in that direction, but Government were reedgnwing the principle in the measure that they would submit to the House, in which they proposed to exempt all improvement from taxation of the value of from Lsooto L3OOO, and beyond that of imposing a graduated land tax. During the discussion it was elicited that Native lands would not be sold, but let on a leasehold system which was being prepared.
