A Suggestion.
Sir,- The Finance Committee of the Harbor Board suggest as a check on the payment of rates, that a defaulters' list, tfcc, should bo placed on tho table each meeting night. I will venture to say that after the first; month nob one of the councillors would look into it, and if they did would soe if their own rate was oredited, but would not know if others had paid- their rate and nofe been credited. I would suggest that each ratepayer bo numbered, let his number be written in red ink on the top of his demand and receipt, and^on the first of each month have tho following advertisement inserted in the paper :— " Gi&borne Borough Council. Tho following rates were received last month;— (then let the numbers follow) If any rate has been paid and not ] included in above, please send notice to office." On the bottom of receipts have printed : " Plcnse look in papor and see this is acknowledged. " One inch in paper would perhaps be sufficient, and it would be very useful to many ratepayers who hava to trusfe others to pay their rate. — I am, <fee M l;i Posses,
