WELLINGTON, Last night. The remains' of the late W. N. Blair, late Engineer-in-Chief, were escorted to the steamer Takapuna this afternoon by a cortege of somo hundreds on foot and a number of carriages. The pall bearers were His Honor Mr Justice Donniston, Sir Robert Stout, Hon. J. M, Larnach, and Messrs J. H. Cook, W. M. Hannay, Q. S. Cooper, J. A, Macarthur, and Dr M'Gregjor. The Ministry were represented by the Hons. Ballance and Buckley. On reaching the wharf the coffin was taken from the hears© and carried down to the vessel's side, where a boat had been lowered. In this the coffin was placed, covered with the Union Jack and lashed to the thwarts. The davits were then swung inwards and the boat hoisted on deck. The coffin was covered with numerous wreaths. A bunch of keys of various sizes was found on him, and . tho police believe he is connected with several recent burglaries. The census returns show the population to be 22,389, a decrease since 1886 of 867 persons. The total population of the suburban boroughs is 23,450, being an increase of 491 persons. In the whole census of the district comprising Dunedin and suburbs, Taieri, Peninsula and port, Waikouaiti, and South Waitaki counties, there is an increase of 1300 persons since .1886. OAMARU, To-day. The census returns show the total population of Oamaru to be 5686, an increase of 356 on the presents-census. WESTPORT, To-day. The census gives 2666, an increase of 1000 over the last census.
