THE HOSPITAL SPORTS.

Si:. Amuikw's Day has been sol apart for several yoars for the purpose of an athlotic gathering, the proceeds of which has been devoted towards augmenting the funds of the Hospital. Ever since the gathering was initiated, until yesterday, the sun ha s shone forth on the day chosen with a kindly lustre, but for the last few days there had boon misgivings as to the weather that would greet the holiday this year. When the southerly weather set in on Thursday hopes were entertained that it would blow over before Monday. On Saturday it promised to do so, but on Sunday there was a threatening aspect, and at dawu on Monday the prospect was anything but cheerful. As the morning wore on the occasional rift in the clouds to the eastward gave hopes that before noon the sun would come out and dispel the then uncertainty. The Committee were sanguine that the fair weather hitherto enjoyed would beam on them as the day progressed, and decided to go on with the sports. At 10.30, the time of the first event, a very fair gathering had collected on the Park Company's ground, and notwithstanding an occasional drizzle of a shower the weather still gave great promise of a fine afternoon. When midday was reached the fates decided otherwise, and during the remainder of the day a light rain set in, making outdoor sport anything but a pleasure. The uncertainty of the weather had the effect of largely diminishing the concourse that would otherwise have gathered for this popular event. The suitability of the ground for sports of this kind was highly commented i>n, and tho Park Company can look forward to many a keen and closely contested race, other than with horses, being decided upon their property. The music of the Garrison Band went far to enliven the proceedings. The Committee worked hard and had at the end of the day the satisfaction of knowing that, notwithstanding the weather, the proceeds were in excess of former years.
