News was received in town to-day of the sudden death of a girl named Lizzie Clarke, a pupil in Miss Engari's Ponsonbj Seminary. It was decided at the twelvth annual meeting of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association last night to join the New Zealand Association. The Auckland Club was the only one not affiliated. TIMARU, To-day. \V. Powell, cabinetmaker, was sentenced to 28 days' hard labor for stealing firewood from a neighbor. Powell had been long suspected and then warned, when he replied that the police were not smart enough to catch him. Sergt. Livingstone caught him in the act at 4.30 yesterday morning. NEW PLYMOUTH, To-day. With regard to the libel action Mynott and Corkhill, the latter has been advised that in view of all circumstances attending the publication of an apology, signed "Hooper," whiclmppeared in the Taranaki Herald, lie is technically responsible for its publication, and Mr Samuel, his solicitor, has therefore this day paid into court the sum of forty shillings by way of damages in the action. In the Supreme Court in the divorce case Dalbcdhyll against Dalbedhyll, petition for dissolution of marriage, in the pleadings there was a denial of the marriage, but that was since withdrawn. Plaintiff alleges troubles commenced shortly after marriage in 18(!5. An adultery was alleged at Hokitika and Dunedin, together with cruelty. Respondent, used to frighten her by alleging that he committed bigamy because he married before having proof of her first husband's deatli. She married respondent in her maiden name because she was under age when first married. He knew these facts before the marriage.
