The hoisting of the Union Jack on the dome of the Exhibition building at Dunedin last week was made the occasion for a festive gathering of the workmen and others concerned in the undertaking. In proposing success to the undertaking, Mr Joubert said : -" To most of you exhibitions are a novelty; to me it is, I may almost say, a stale game, having been concerned with nearly two score of such undertakings. There is, hovvever, a point of novelty in this one. Prince Albert, when he instituted the great Exhibition of 1851, had Hyde Park to deal with. The Parisians have the Champ de Mars. America found in Philadelphia Fairmount Park : Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide were provided with beautiful gardens already made. Not so here. Not very long ago the waves of the great Pacific covered the very ground where now stands this great building. Elsewhere nature had done half the work; in this instance it is all the work of man. Without in any way wishing to be deemed sacriligious. 1 may borrow from (ienesis : "You made the land and everything thereon." More power to you, I say -to chose who have conquered the sea as well as you who have constructed thia exhibition luu'lding, which you have every roa■s<>ti k> V«j proud :•{."
