[William Wilkie Collins, eldest son of the late William Collins, R.A., the wellknown painter of rustic scenes, was born ' in London in January, 1824. Until 1848 lie was engaged in commercial and law 1 pursuits, and then he devoted himself entirely to literature. Most of his early works appeared in Household Words and AH t!ie Year Round. Mr Collins later works fioni 1803 to 1883 have obtained r world-wide renown. " The Woman in r White" and "Queen of Hearts," pub- « lished in 185!), are greatly celebrated. . My Miscellanies, Armadale, The Moonf stone, Man and Wife, Poor Miss Finch, Miss or Mrs ? The New Magdalen, The L:iw and the Lidy, Two Destinies, The Haunted Hotel, Fallen Leaves, A Rogue's Life, Heart and Science, are amongst his works. The principal works have passed through several editions in Britain and America, and have been translated into several other languages. Mr Collins lias written several dramas, which, with the * exception of "The Frozen Deep," have ' been rather failures. Lately the great ' novelist lias been in much ill-health.
