LANCASHIRE PLATE.

London, Sept. 2.1. At the Manchester meeting to-day the Lancashire Plate, of 12,000 so vs. added to the sweepstake, was won by Duke of Portland's Donovan 1 Chitabob 2 Alicante 3 A WONDERFUL HOUSE. Donovan was bred by the Duke of Portland, in whose colors he first ran in the Brocklesby Stakes, at Lincoln. This he won from Poem, and nine others, and he followed this up with an easy victory in the valuable Portland Stakes, at the Leicester Spring Meeting, in which ho beat a field of 25. At Manchester, in the Whitsuntide Plate, Chitabob, on receipt of 131 b, very easily turned the tables on Donovan, who, however, won his next five races. These were the New Stakes at Ascot, Homebred Foal Stakes at the Bibury Club Meeting, Hurstbourne Stakes at the Stockoridge Meeting proper, July Stakes at Newmarket, and Ham Stakes at Goodwood. After winning the last-named race on the opening day, he waspulledouton Thursday for the Prince of Wales' Stakes, bt»t finished a bad third to El Dorado and Gold. He next scored a brace of victories at the Newmarket First October Meeting in the Buckingham Stakes and Hopeful Stakes ; and at the second October Meeting, in the Middle Park Plate, cantered away from Gulliver, Clover (French colt), Enthusiast, Swift, Saint Serge, Miguel, Evergreen, Gay Hampton, Australia, Gold, Ben Strome, Minthe, and the colt by Hermit out of Ma Belle. In the Dewhurst Plate he wound up a successful two-year-old season by defeating Enthusiast, Australia, and others, the success being achieved by half-a-length. This season he made his debut in thoPrince of Wales's Stakes at Leicester, wherein he scored an easy victory over Pioneer, Minthc, Enthusiast, Gay Hampton and others In the Two Thousand Guineas Donovan was unaccountably beaten by Enthusiast, though in all probability the former's victory was more attributable to Tom Cannon's horsemanship than to any actual merit of his own. Fin- the Newmarket Shakes of 75<'0,sovs, however, he showed up in quite dill'erent colors, and won comfortably from his stable mate The Turcophone, and a good field. He started a red-hot favorite for the Derby, which fell an easy prey to him, the field behind him being composed of Miguel, El Dorado, Enthusiast, and six others. At Ascot a month later Donovan was still in the winning vein, and he achieved an easy victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes. Lust week he romped home a winner m . the St. Leger. Donovan's victory in the Lancashire Plate makes the twentieth occasion on which he has sported silk, with the result that he finished first sixteen times, second twice, and third once, while his winnings in stakes amount to the enormous sum of £56,562 15s. " Unto him that hath shall be given" is a Scriptural proverb that receives an apt illustration in connection with the turf career of the Duke of Portland. His Grace who is one of the richest men in England besides winning the Derby, St. Leger and Lancashire Plate (whereby Donovan credited his noble owner with the biggest stake ever run for, viz., L 12,030) has almost completely swept the board of the Mammouth Stakes, and his winning total to date now amounts to a sum bordering on L 95,000. Lord Falmouth's record is L 34,380.
