COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tm-: County Council met this afternoon. Present Crs. Clark (chairman), Coleman, Twohcy, King, McPhail, Orr, Murphy and Wethered. • Tlie Patutahi Road Board wrote asking what amount the Council proposed to give in the event of the lload Board deciding not to strike a rate for the year. If the Board struck a .}d rate they would receive from rate and subsidy LIBO. The Clerk stated thafc the amount the Council would give would be LB3 10s if the Board struck no rate. A loug epistle, a.s long a.s a lawyer's bill of costs, was received from John Thompson, late R.E., claiming a sum for valuable services redered. He woukl be quite satisfied with LSO. — Mr Thompson was referred to the Council of 1885, the letter being simply received. Mr Deßlaguiere wrote applying for the vacant post of Returning Officer for the Waikohu Riding. — Decision deferred. The Treasury wrote advising that L 221 8s ld, subsidy, had been passed for payment. The Patutahi Road Board's subsidy of L3O was omitted. Mr H. Rhodes wrote complaining that he had beeu kept waiting a quarter of an hour at the Tologa ferry, and then had to ferry himself across ; and this was one of several occasions. — Mr J. Trimmer, ferryman afc Tologa Bay, wrote denying MiRhodes' statement thafc he had been kept waiting afc the ferry. The letter concluded, " Mr Rhodes has nofc been on the best terms with me for some time past " — The Clerk stated that he had inquired from several Tologa residents, and in every instance he had been told that the ferry was well conducted. — Letter acknowledged. The Surveyor-General wrote thafc a surveyor could not be spared to lay off the road betweeu Gisborne and Mahia.— The matter temporarily postponed. The Crown Lands Commissioner wrote that the Government- would nofc make a stock reserve at the " Quarry Reserve," Patutahi. — Attention of Mr Williams to be drawn to promises previously made. Messrs Nolan and Skeet, solicitors, wrote applying for payment for stone quarriifd by Mr D. Malone and appropriated by Mr J. Mcintosh, and threatened legal proceedings if claim be not settled amicably — The Engineer stated that no authority had been given to McIntosh to remove fche stone — Council denied liability. The Survey Office wrote forwarding LIO 10s od, accrued thirds from rents of grazing runs. —Engineer to report on spending the money. The Treasury wrote correcting a statement made by the " Marlborough News " with regard to subsidies, and stating thafc the subsidies would remain the same as afc present. The Clerk stated that the police had reported that Natives had been stealing timber on Makarika road. — Engineer authorised to sell the timber. The local committee of the Dunedin Exhibition wrote applying for a grant of L 25 for fche purpose of aiding in the representation of the district. Messrs Shelton aud Bright formed the deputation that carried the letter. Mr Bright made a few remarks as to the steps thafc had been taken. — The Chairman thought it advisable to vote the L 25, if the Council had the power. — Cr Coleman moved ancl Cr Twohey seconded to thafc efiect. — Cr Murphy objected, stating that all the money in his district had been allocated, and he did noi see where the money was to come from. The motion was carried. Mr Bright returned thanks. Tlie following tenders were received : — Works at Pakarae : - Mcintosh and Doleman, L3OB 12s, Lo 5s per chain (L7B 10s) ; F. Hicks, L 354 ; P. McLaughlin, L2H7 18s (id, L 3 per chain (LB2 10s)"; R. Knox, L2r,5. L 2 12s per chain (L? 0).
