FOOTBALL.

* Warn no of the match Wellington v. Auckland the N.Z. Times says : — The match throughout was one of the hardesfcand mosfc determined that has erer been played on the ground, both teams doing tlieir utmost from start to finish to gain the day. The state of the ground no doubt militated against the success of the Auckland backs, and on the other hand ifc also affected the play of the Wellington forwards, whose brilliancy in the loose work would have been seen to more advantage had the ground been harder. The Auckland forwards proved a very tough lofc, and the local players had anything bufc an easy task to hold them. In the loose play the latter asserted their superiority, and they were also better on the line out. The Auckland backs played a splendid, combined game, and now and then they treated the spectators to some excellent passing and running. Jervis, Rees and Warbrick were the best of them. The former played a dashing game all through, and Rees proved himself a clever halfback ; while Warbrick's grand defensive play repeatedly saved his side. The play of tho Wellington backs was good, their kicking and tackling being excellent; and the passing of the whole team at tinies was splendid. Gage showed great form, his kicking especially being good ; and Moorhouse played with an immense amount of dash— his play at time was really brilliant.
