Atkinson moved the second reading of the Rating Amendment Act to exempt schools within boroughs from rates. Pie intended moving in Committee to reinsert the clause providing for exemption of friendly societies' lodge rooms from rates, which was struck out by the Legislative Council. Mr Fish opposed the Bill at some length, and moved that it be read that day fortnight. ' After a long discussion the second reading was carried by 33 to 20. The House rose at 1 o'clock. Iv the Legislative Council the Naval and Military Settlers Volunteers Land Bill passed through Committee aud was read a third time and passed. Hons. Miller, McLean, and Pharazyn j were appointed managers to confer with the managers of the other House to dis- j cuss amendments made in the Selectors of [ Land Re-valuation Bill. A free conference was appointed to consider the amendments made by the Hou;:o of Representatives in. the Land Transfer Act Amendment Bill. The Council rose at 1 till 7.30. To-day. The House on Saturday voted L2OOO for the four daughters of the late Mr Macandrew, with one dissentient voice. Mrßallance's amendment for immediate dissolution was lost by 35 to 30 on the motion to go into Committte of Supply. Only the Appropriation Bill remains to be discussed, and some reports and amendments to clauses in Bills sent down from the Upper House. These are of m> importance. The Property Tax Bill wa.s passed through its final stages on Saturday. Most of the supplementary estimates were passed on Saturday night. The business is likely to be finished to-day. This morning on the motion to go into Conunitteeof Supply, Mr T. Parata moved an amendment that thoNativoLand Stamp Duty be reduced from £10 to £5 per cent. The amendment was lost by 28 to 22,
