[lUUI X.M.S. ZKALANDIA AT AUCKLAND.] AMERICA. San Francisco, .\pril 7. A movement has been set on foot in influential quarters in the United States to abolish the Electoral College and to elect t'.ie President by direct popular vote. Edwin Booth, the tragedian, was stricken with paralysis on the stage of the Lyceum Theatre, Rochester, New York, on the night of April 3, while playing in the second scene of the second net of " Othello " In the opinion of his physician, Mr Booth will uover play again. Twenty thousand persons paraded in procession on St. Patrick's Day in New York. The privilege of hoisting the Irish flag over the Municipal Hall, which was denied last year by Mayor Hewitt, was conceded on this occasion, and the Green Harp banner floated from the tall staff, much to the disgust of the native Americans. A Washington correspondent vouches for the absolute accuracy of the following: — " The German Minister received on April •2nd a telegram in cypher from Prince Bismarck instructing him to cable at th* p.ulicst moment the names of the vessels ordered by the Secretary of the Navy to proceed to Samoa to take the place of those wrecked ; and also the number of men and officers carried by each ship, its tonnage and horsepower, the nmnber, size, and kind of guns, whether the vessels arc equipped with torpedoes, and whether the sending of reinforcements to Samoa will weaken the American navy in any other part of the world to any considerable extent. The Minister was also instir:' ■ ' to find out and report, to the German lvu^igu Office without loss of time the condition of new vessels in process of construction. A Santiago de Chile correspondent writes under date February 20th :— " In lest thaii 1 week the bodies of seven murdered people h:ivc been found hi different streets of this city. Of this number five at least bear marks proving that they were murders/ The Saturday half-holiday law has been repealed in New York by the Legislature. Glaus Sprcckels, who owns controlling interests in the sugar plantations in the Sandwich Islands, denies that he has sold out to an English syndicate as was reported. H» says he retains his property in the islands. H(! went there originally for the benefit of his health.
