A Serious Charge.
« Wellington, ! o d ay. At the Resident Magistrate's Court this morning Julia M;irth;i Thorpe was charged with unlawfully using instruments on Flora Brown (now Mrs Nash) in December, ISS7, for the purpose of procuriug a miscarriage. At the outset there were several warm passages between the Bench of Justices and Mr L Jillicoe, counsel for Mrs Thorpe, owing to the frequent interruptions of Mr Jellicoe. Mr Thompson, who conducted the prosecution, also complained of the offensive conduct of accused's counsel. Mrs Nash flatly refused to answer any questions tending to eliminate herself, and the only evidence adduced was that of Mrs Walkiv, who accompanied Mrs Nash to the residence of Mrs Thorpe. This evidence was cf an unimportant nature, and Inspector Thompson seeing the case was beset with difficulties said he would proceed no further, and the caso was dismissed. Mr JeUieoe said if an enquiry \yas held into the reasons for the prosecution the result would not be creditable to those who undertook it. This called for a hot retort from Inspector Thompson, who was supported by the Bench.
