Mr Weaver, accompanied by Messrs r Maiido and Graham, left town yesterday morning for the South I'acitic Company's , works. The object of this visit is to enable , Mr Weaver to explain on the ground the ] position of a Hairs and the nature of the job , le lias to contend with. Steam will no , doubt be got up and the exact depth at • which the tools are prevented from working , by the flaw in the pipe carefully ascertained. ( Messrs Brown and Smaill are engaged in f making a casing spear for use in the with- j drawal of the pipes. This spear is a most ( ingenious contrivance, different to any tool , that has hitherto been used for a similar . purpose in this district. It is about two ] feet six inches in length, and has on its sides ] four pieces of steel which are so arranged , that when they are brought opposite to each . other at the bottom of the stem they tightly , fill and hold the pipe with a grip that no , pressure would loosen, yet for the purpose , of removing the spear a slight jarring only ( is necessary. The spear will be finished by t the end of the week, and it is thought that ( an attempt will at first be made to use it to j take the bulge out of the pipe down the well. , Save yourmonev and buy your Boots and | Shoes at HcnnessyV, where every line in stock is the best of its kind procurable, and 1 at prices that "can't b.
