The following account of the career of one af the most illustrious Englishmen of modern :lays is taken from " Men of the Times'' : The Right Hon. John Bright is the son of Jacob Bright, of Greonbank, near Rochdale, ivhere he was born Nov. 16, 1811. Having received the rudiments of a substantial English education, he entered his father's business, and became a member of the tirm of John Bright and Brothers, cotton-spinnors md manufacturers, of Rochdale. He took part in the Reform agitation of 1831-32, but lid not enter Parliament till IS4B, when he «it for Durham. Mr Bright afterwards sat for Manchester, but was rejected by that constituency in 1857, owing to his pro- < iiounced peace ideas. Since then be has sat vlmost continuously for Birmingham. Mr i Bright, in conjunction with Mr Cobden, led the ngitation which rcsulte-d in the ■epeal of the Corn Laws.
