I PURGING. The greftt' half-yearly purge begins on Monday, V'hcn the Queen's Chief Justice for the colony opens his Court. The circuit itittin are as>rt of Fi-ast of tho Purinca tion in each district, a kind of moral fumigation, or the applying of antidot ea to go,ci:tl euls. No dou ; >t th« p'irifica tion is as much wanted this tiirn as usual , p"S3il>ly even more so. But » groat dt wi of the purging that is wanted will not be done, unfortunately, and lots of what vvi ) should be? glad to be rid <>f wil, be left flourishing still instead of beini; scoured ?iway. But B'icial scourifi^ c;t« only b( j -done slowly, and we must b. thankfi x\ to get an instalm&at nt a time. There in no need to say where the purging iaraoat -wanted. It is too well-known,— ±n__£njak— — k-at-fm;.. f.hn.f. thfl Court WOUld bfl
almost needless. Some people who have " shot" cases on will be wiser when the Court is over than they are now —when they have found their little " try-ons" have failed. And there is any number of them, too, and as to some of them the triers may ho a little startled at results. Sumo of the " shot " stuff ha-* boon summarily put an end to by the triers being asked for something more ;olid tnan noise. If that was done in every case wha f . .v change there would be ! If security for £20 of costs were demanded from every plaintiff there would be hardly a case lof> to try. Most of the litigation to take place is of tho grossest sort of try-i>n,and if the " bluffers" wero culled on to plank £10 the causelist would tumble to pieces. But as it is the purgation will do lots of good.
