THE POPE'S JUBILEE.

PRESENTS FROM NEW ZEALAND,

The Jubilee of Pope Loo XIII. will occur in December next, when he will hare attained the fiftieth year of his priesthood ; and, in celebration of that event, Bishop Luck, in the name of the Roman Catholic clergy and people of Auckland, will present to his Holiness a costly and very handsome pedestal inlaid writing table, constructed of New Zealand woods of picked specimens, and polished throughout. Pohutakawa, rimu, puriri, and kauri, mottled and figured enter into the design, there being three specimens of the latter wood in the table. The side pannels ara of mottled kauri (those on the inner side of the pedestals having a very beautiful shade, since they were selected from the baße of the tree), while the edgings are of rimu. Mottled kauri has also been uaed for the draw fronts, of which there are ten, and these are bordered with " birda-eye" kauri of a very fine grain, tin's wood having been used exclusively for the mount* ings of the smaller panels. The table top is mounted with two large panels of pohutakawa, highly polished, the wood, which possesses perhaps the most porfect shade of any in the design, having been carefully selected, and presenting a very effective appearance. A colorless polish has been used in finishing the work, and thus the natural tint of the woods has been preserved. The table is a very artistic piece of workmanship, and its production reflects considerable credit upon Messrs Winks and Hall, who say that it is the most handsome they have yet designed. A silver plate bearing a Latin inscription, of which the following is a translation in substance will be attached to the table : — "To His Holiness Pope Leo XIIJ., on the celobraion of the jubilee of his priesthood, from John^Edmund Luck, 0.5.8., Bishop of Auckland, and the clergy and Benedictine monks of his diocese." From Wellington, a beautiful book album, containing photographs of the priests who have labored in that archdiocese, and of those who are still working there, together with sketchea of the principal churches, Bchools, presbyteries, and other institution erected by them, will be presented to the Pope. Each page of photographs and sketchea will have a corresponding page of interest* ing narrative exquisitely printed and illuminated. The book will be accompanied with a richly illuminated address and the offerings of the whole of the arch* diocese to his Holiness. In order that the work of preparing the book may be proceeded with at once Archbishop Redwood has enjoined all the priests in, charge of stations in the archdiocese to forward to him at Wellington, by the end of next June, the photos of themselves and their confreres and of their churches, schools, presbyteries, &c, together with a short sketch of the mission from its cri«rin to the present day. — New Zealand Herald.
