WRECK OF THE GO-AHEAD. ONE LIFE LOST.
Napier, to-day. The s.s. Go-Ahead, Capt. Plumley, went ashore at Cape Kidnappers at 2 o'clock on Friday morning and is now a total wreck. All hands were saved except one fireman, named Ja3. Grinning, who would not leave the ship in the boat when all the others went off, fearing that the boat could not live in such a sea as was running. Some time after at low water he attempted to swim ashore, but was drowned before he got half way to the beach. The crew and passengers who escaped made their way to Clifton station. The accident is due to the terribly thick weather, which rendered it impossible to see the land. The vessel was in the breakers before it was known that anything was wrong. The vessel is a total wreck, bottom upwards, and nearly all broken up. Wellington, to-day. The Go-Ahead was insurod in the Union office for £5,500, which was re-insured as follows : — Thames and Mersey, £500 ; National, £250 ; New Zealand, £1000 ; South British, £1000 ; Colonial, £500 ; standard, £500 ; Victoria, £750 ; and Equitable, £500.
