THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.

STARTING THE WORK. Greymouth, to-day. Yesterday was a gala day in Greymouth and Brunnerton on account of the turning of tho first sod of the Midland Railway. The population turned out en masse, and at tho lowest computation those present must have numbered 2000. Among thoso present were theHon E. Richardson, Mr Brodie Hoare (Chairman of Directors), Mr Avigdon (one of the contractors), and Mr Alan Scott (Managing Director). Mr Brodie Hoare asked Mr Richardson to inaugurate tho enterprise by turning the first sod, and hoped that the railway, when completed, would develop the resources of Westland, Canterbury and Nelson. Both Mr Richardson and Mr Hoare made long speeches, hi tho evening a banquet was held at which 200 gueota were present.
