HORRIBLE ACCIDENT.
Wellington, to-day. A fatal accident happened here just before 11 a, m. to-day. AtHayman's bulk store on Lambton Quay a lift was sent up with a light load and upon reaching the second floor the chain broke and the lift fell to the bottom. In the lift were a boy and a man named William Catchen. The former escaped with a few bruises, but the latter was h iriibly mangled and died instantly. Both his thighs were broken and the stomach was torn open and a ghastly wound was niada on the head. It is not at all at pre3ont clear how Cutchen came to be killed while the boy was meroly bruised, but probably he was crushed against the timbers in its descent.
