THE BARRIER MURDER.

A.ucklan'l), to-day

In the Barrier murder case yesterday Mr O'Meagher continued his address in defence of Caffery. He pointed out that there was no evidence to show that Caffrey was in the ljuhi when the fourth shot was fired ; that tho evidence showed he was away looking for Mrs Seymour. As the medic.! i?vidonco showed that it would have been impossible for Taylor to have gone into the next room if he had received the wound which proved fatal, consequently Caffery could not have fired the fatal shot. Caffery did not know Taylor was a dead man until after he had joined Perm. He had had a difficulty in getting Perm away ; and why was it that he said " Don't harm tho old woman." Mr O'Meagher suggested tlvih Ponu was unwilling to leave because she was the only witness who could spe:ik against him. He hoped, in conclusion, that the jury would let it be seen by their verdict that an unscrupulous woman and her paramour should not triumph by the death of an innocent man.

Mr Napier speaks for Perm to-day, when the case will be finished.

In the Barrier murder trial today Mr Napier made a statement on behalf of Perm that he only meant to help Caffrey to escape with Mrs Seymour, and that Caffrey fired the fatal shot in the bedroom. Mr Napier appealed to the jury not to aend an innocent man to an untimely grave.
