SHIPPING DISASTERS.
♦ SUPPOSED WRECK: THE KAWATIRI ACCIDENT. Wellington, to-day. Captain Wood, of the barque G. M. Tucker, which arrived last evening from Nev. o itle reports having passed a portion of a wreck at noon on Sunday about 200 miles off Cape Farewell, but he could not however make a close inspection, tho wind being unfavorable. The wreckage which floated bottom upwards appeared to belong to a vessel of about 200 tons, and was evidently that portion from the stem to about midships, so that she must have had her back broken. The damage to the steamer Kawatiri, which struck off Rangitoto Island on Tuesday night is estimated at £100. One plate will have to be renewed and uyo others taken out and repaired. Sydney, to-day. An attempt was made yesterday to tow off the s.a. Corangamite, which recently ran ashore at Jervis Bay, but the effort made proved unsuccessful.
