THE STEAMSHIP DISASTER IX AUSTRALIA.
♦ LATEST PARTICULARS. DRADFUL LOSS OF LIFE. Sydney, to-day. The Kielawara was bound from this port to Brisbane, and the Helen Niccoi was coming from Grafton to Sydney. The Kielawara had 25 passengers. The Heien Niccol was severely damaged by the collision, and had to put into Trial Bay. The names of the Kielawara's passengers are as follows : — A family of eight named Schepper ; Mrß Johnston and child ; Misses Calder, Gallagher, and Bultin ; Messrs Wilson, Copland, A. James, Scott, Laugh, McGrade, McDonald, Nott, and eleven in the steerage. The names oi those saved are : — Preece, Barton, Lodge, Greaves, Laugh, Copeland, A. James, Connolly, Maher, Corby, Snewur, Gray, Young, and Nott ; besides others unknown. It is feared that both Mr and Mrs Wilson have perished with the wreck of the Kielawara. Latkr. The Kielawara's crew numbered 35, all told. The total loss of life amounts to 43, made up as follows : — 25 passengers of the Kielawara, the captain, and eleven of the crew, and six of the crew of the Helen Niccol. All the mates and engineers of the Kielawara were saved. Among the passengers who were drowned was Mrs Wilson, of Brisbane, daughter of Madame Carandini, the well-known vocalist. Me Grade, the Victorian jockey, was also drowned. The steamer Australasian is bringing the Helen Niccol to Sydney. The steamers Lawrence and Game Cock have gone to meet them, and it is expected they will arrive to-morrow morning. Mr John McDonald, drowned in the Kielawarra, was a brother of Mr McDonald, manager of the Union Bank of Nelson. Miss Calder was a daughter of Captain Calder, of the Kielawarra. The Schepper family, who were all lost, but recently returned from Germany, and were proceeding to Maryborough. The Chamber of Commerce voted an address of sympathy with the relations of the deceased. 2. 40 p.m. The steamer Helen Niocol arrived from Trial Bay this morning with the passengers. A great crowd met her at the wharf and much excitement prevailed. The Keilawarra was struck amidships, close to the engines, and retreat from the saloon Avas thus cut off. It now appears that the passenger, Mrs Wilson, drowned, is not the daughter of Madame Carandini as at first stated. The Captain Calder referred to in the last telegram is captain of the steamship Victoria, and not the Keilawarra. [There appears to be some doubt as to the name of the steamer and whether Capt Tozer is the commander of the vessel lost. Later telegrams received to-day make the the steamer's name the Kielawarra, but there is no vessel of that name advertised by Howard, Smith and 00. That firm, however advertise the Konoowarra which is commanded by Capt. Tozer.]
