Tho Jubilee Municipal gathering which took place last night was a, brilliant success. In the Assembly last night tho debate on theParkes vote of censure motion again came on. The debate on the vote of censure on the Government, proposed by Sir Henry Parks, has been adjourned until to-night. ADELAIDE, To-day. The Legislative Council rejected the bill providing for the payment of members which was recently passed by the House of Assembly. WELLINGTON, To-day. The steamer Hinemoa brought 100 penguins and two sea-hawks from the Snares, ten live albatrosses from Campbell Islands, and four sea-lions from Auckland Islands. The last - named curious creatures are to be sent as a present to the English Zoological Society to be added to their Regent's Park collection. The Chief Surveyor at Nelson reports that the steamer Lyttelton, which was at the Beef Barrels, lies in the way of steamers on the track between Okoroßay.and Beef Barrels rock with the foremast showing three feet above the water at low water. The wreck has been temporarily flagged and buoyed. Mr J. P. McAlister of the Justice Department has been appointed to the vacant Deputy Registrarship of the Supreme Court at Dunedin. In the Supreme Court last night in a case against Charles Hodgson charging him with embezzling monies belonging to the Union Bank, the jury found a verdict of not guilty, giving the prisoner the benefit of the doubt in consequence of the careless way in which the bank kept its books. At the Supreme Court Woods for forgery pleaded guilty, and the probation officer made a report in favor of allowing prisoner out on probation. ..Judgo Prendergast called on tho prisoner to say whether he knew .inything, and the prisoner replied he was suspected of stealing at Napier. The judge ordered prisoner back into custody pending an investigation. A colored man named Murray for forgery was sentenced to 12 months. O AMARU, To-day. Tho police have discovered the body of a child about three weeks old buried in a hole in a garden in the north part of the town. The body was in an advanced stage of decomposition but fearfully mutilated. One of the legs was cut off at the hip, and the head and arms and other parts of the body were cut and hacked about. The mother of the child is known, but the police only discovered that something was wrong the other day and to-day found the body buried in a garden. DUNEDIN, To-day. At the inquest on the body of McLaughlin, who died at Queenstown, the evidence shows that death resulted from fatty degeneration of the heart. Deceased was a schoolmaster at Cardrona. Sensational paragraphs recently went round regarding an attack upon hia family by rats. The following nominations have been received for Dunedin Centr.il : — William Hutchinson, Thos. Bracken, William Darlling, and Chas. Robert Chapman. The show of hands was in favor of Bracken. A poll was demanded by Chapman. AUCKLAND, To-day. A cablegram has been received from Port Darwin that the barque Rapids, stranded on the rocks, has been abandoned. The crew were saved. The report and balance-sheet of the South British Insurance Company for the year ending 3rd August, to be submitted to the shareholders, shows an income of £246,700 ; general expenditure, £25G,045. The balance to debit of profit and loss account at the closing of the books was £9348. It is understood that Dr Cremoni, from Harton House, London, who has 17 years' experience, will be appointed Medical Superintendent at the Whau Lunatic Asylum, vice Dr Young, resigned. £100 damages has been clone to the tombstones in the cemetery. It is the third time such acts have occurred, and the police have a clue to the perpetrators.
