AUCKLAND, To-day. At the Trade and Labor Council motions have been carried denouncing the truck system prevailing at the Auckland country sawmills, and in favor of returning working men as Parliamentary representatives, of the inspection of workshops, of the co-. operative principle, of a land tax, of securing to the State the future unearned increment, and of eight hours being a working day for the whole colony, A letter was read from Sir J. Yogel to the Congress in response to an invitation to ad- ( dress them on labor questions. The letter entered at length into the relations of capital and labor. A vote of thanks was accorded to Sir Julius, and it was resolved to ask him to use his influence to pass through Parliament the measures which the Congress has adopted. At a meeting of 37 policy-holders representing £36,000, resolutions were passed unanimously disapproving of Driver's appointment as unfair to the service, as smacking of politicalpatronage and carrying too high a salary. CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The only point now in dispute between the bootmakers and the employers is with reference to the proportion of boys to journeymen to be employed in the clicking department. The men decided that the proportion should be one boy to four clickers. The masters refused to agree to this, and suggested that one boy should be employed for every 8 hands in the whole of the factory, and two for any number of adults up to 20. They also suggested that the apprentices should be for six years instead of four, as previously. The men will consider the masters' proposals. HOKITIKA, To-day. The Bank of New Zealand has shipped 4429 ounces of gold, valued at £17,700. The Governor will pay a short visit, arriving here to-morrow night. He will not be accompanied by Admiral Tyron. DUNEDIN, To-day. The Elderslie takes 25,083 carcases of mutton from Dunedin. She has already 20,000 on board. Mr Justice Williams, on .reading Sheriff Watts' affidavit, said he was satisfied that the alleged misarriage in the panel case arose through circumstances over which the Sheriff had no control, viz., his own absence and ill-health and the absence of his deputy. A resolution was adopted, "If any scheme of railway construction is adopted by the colony it should be one including the completion of all the trunk lines as contemplated In the original public works scheme ; that the money borrowed for such a purpose should be allocated strictly and specifically to the construction of the several lines, and that they should be proceeded with simultane* ously." WELLINGTON, To-day. Two of the Sydney " magsmen " were arrested here on Saturday, one (Allen Cockburn) on a charge of vagrancy and the other (Andrew Black) for stealins a coat at Groytown. The remainder of the gang are still at Greytown.

NAPIER, To-day. Nearly ?00 children are at prosent attending the District School. William Triggs, agent of the Equitable Insurance Company, Now Yurk, was arreßted on Saturday morning on a warrant from Christchurch, charging him with fraudulent bankruptcy.
